The Spice Girls are one of the most successful Girl Groups of all time. Formed in London in 1994, The group would go on to sell millions of records, sell-out stadiums, star in their own film and bring the world the sensation that was Girl Power.
The group were made up of five ladies from across England and quickly developed their own style and persona. Emma Bunton, the youngest, was Baby Spice, Melanie Chisholm, known for energetic dancing and wearing tracksuits was Sporty Spice. Flamed haired Geri Halliwell became Ginger Spice, Victoria Adams, later to marry football star David Beckham was Posh Spice. And, to use her own words "kind of in-your-face" Melanie Brown was christened Scary Spice.
They debut single Wannabe hit this top spot in the music charts in over 30 countries. The Spice Girls soon became a global brand the like of which has not been seen from a British group since The Beatles, beetlemania. Within the space of three years the band were on top of the world, some half a million people attended their switching on of the Christmas lights in London's Oxford Street. Huge advertising contracts were signed with major companies such as Polaroid, impulse and Pepsi. And of course the girls music was selling like hot cakes too.
